Nisyros: feel the Earth's heartbeat
A volcanic island
located in the Aegean sea
Nisyros is a Greek volcanic island located in the Aegean Sea. It is one of the most beautiful islands, still untouched
by tourist growth. It is part of the Dodecanese group of islands, situated between the islands of Kos and Tilos.
Nisyros is a place of wild beauty.
According to mythology, it was created during the Gigantomachy, the war between Gods and Giants. Poseidon chased the Giant Polyvotis down to Kos, broke off a piece of it with his trident and threw it onto his enemy, sinking him forever in the bottom of the Aegean Sea. The legendary rock is the island of Nisyros and it is said that the volcano’s explosions are the angry breathing of the defeated Giant. These explosions shaped the island, which is considered to be the youngest volcanic center in Greece, and is still active.
